Hmmm...for possibly the first time ever, there appears to be some interesting news from Planet Libertines. Taking the stage tonight, the Cockney scuzz-punks appear to have been reduced to a trio - it later transpires that perma-smashed guitarist and sometime singer Pete Doherty has been kicked out of the band.
Unfortunately, that's really about as interesting as this evening gets - over a year in the spotlight and there's still absolutely no sign of the Libertines becoming an even vaguely captivating band. They suffer from a serious lack of stage presence (frontman Carl Barratt rarely acknowledges the crowd except to say "thanks" after the odd song here and there) and a bad case of MTDS (Memorable Tune Deficiency Syndrome). First single "What A Waster" is still good but the truth is that they've never come anywhere near bettering it and the nondescript likes of "Up The Bracket", "Boys In The Band" and "Death On The Stairs" sink without trace tonight.
The overall impression I'm left with (again) after watching this group is that they're a big hollow void, devoid of any sparkle, wit or insight. If this deathly dull band really says anything to you about your life then I suspect you need to get out more...
