Sometimes it's bands who you go along to see with low expectations who turn out to...well, not exactly torch your preconceptions but certainly warm them over a moderate heat.
Those of you who've looked at this month's album reviews might well have noticed Medium 21's "Killings From The Dial" which, to be honest, sounded like a bit of a mess and warranted a 5/10. Tonight though they're...well, not exactly amazing but certainly better than they sound on record. Maybe they're just one of those bands who respond better to the live atmosphere or maybe they got the mix on the album wrong but whereas the likes of "Daybreak vs Pride" and "The Cable And The Cars" sounded botched and meandering on record, tonight with the sound tuned up properly they've got a backbone and purpose that wasn't there before. Imagine a more docile version of the Cooper Temple Clause (who, tellingly, this lot are supporting next month) and you'd not be far off.
Promising enough then. If Medium 21 can try and capture their live sound a bit better on their next album then we may just make electro-rock titans out of them yet.
