Robochrist (Leeds Brudenell, 4th September 2004)

Support: The Bonsai Kittens

It's not at every gig where the between-band entertainment consists of various luminaries of the Leeds music scene, including members of the Scaramanga Six, Les Flames and the Dead Pets, trying their hand at Rock Karaoke (for the record, your correspondant's Sid Vicious impersonation was greeted by the deafening sound of any A&R men present quickly leaving the building). But then this isn't any other gig.

Tonight is the Bonsai Kittens' last gig for a few months as guitarist Sarah is off to start a new job down in Cambridge - however, they certainly go out with a bang as tonight sees the duo on top form with the playfully vicious likes of "Can We Be Friends?" and "Marshall Lord Of Darkness" rubbing shoulders with a gleeful kicking of Tatu's "All The Things She Said" and the sort of synchronised dance routines and guitar hero poses that make you wonder whether ver Kittens are in fact the long-lost progeny of Kenickie and Van Halen. Whichever way you look at it, it's great fun and hopefully they'll be returning to these climes sooner rather than later.

As for the headliner...well, what can I say about Robochrist that I've not said already on these pages? The guy is definitely one of a kind, blasting through his set of thrash metal guitar mixed with kids' TV samples (including a couple of new bits just to keep us all guessing) and goes down an absolute storm with those present. With a demo CD now officially available, here's hoping things are about to take off properly for this undeniably talented guy.

(NB - Yeah, we know it's an old Robochrist pic, snaps from the night to be posted up here asap)
