Anyone out there remember Hepburn? Ah, just a few of you. I must admit, I'd largely forgotten about them as well until I went to see this gig. For those who've done the sensible thing and undergone psychotherapy to remove all trace of 1999 from their memories, Hepburn were a suspiciously manufactured-looking all-girl group from Nottingham who had a couple of okay-ish Top 20 hits about three years ago and even managed to sneak a cameo appearance on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" before rapidly plummeting back to obscurity. And, no two ways about it, they weren't that dissimilar to Tuuli.
Initially, this Canadian all-girl four-piece draw you in with the freneticity of opening number "Wake Up" and the Donnas-lite spike heel punk of "Rockstar Boyfriend". But, the longer the gig goes on, their limitations become all too obvious - every song is a basic punky three-chord thrash about crap boyfriends, girl power, you know the score. Only their single "It's Over" really sticks in your memory thanks to a semi-catchy hook but the saccharine likes of "Where Are You Now?" are just way too lightweight to make any sort of impact.
Still, Tuuli can console themselves that it took the Donnas five albums to get as good as they are now so maybe there's hope for them yet. And, on the bright side, at least they're not Evanescence.
