Wheatus (Leeds Joseph's Well, 23rd September 2003)

Dear Wheatus, how do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways...

No, actually, let's be fair and give these Anglophile Yanks (the group has actually relocated across the pond to over here in the wake of their post-"Teenage Dirtbag" success) a chance. Despite the fact that they've been responsible for one of the worst albums of the year so far (the terrible "Hand Over Your Loved Ones" - see album reviews if you're curious) it's surely worth going into tonight's gig with an open mind.

The good news then - at least Wheatus don't bring any of the ultra-annoying studio "gimmicks" that made the album so annoying into the live arena tonight. The bad news - this only shows up how substandard the songs are anyway. And it still doesn't alter the fact that "Dynamite Satchel Of Pain" and "The Song I Wrote When You Dissed Me" have got to have some of the most abysmal lyrics of any songs ever.

They do, inevitably, encore with a reasonable enough rendition of "Teenage Dirtbag" but it's much too little far too late. The dumper, it seems, is very much beckoning.
