Gigs like this are infuriating to say the least. For about three quarters of tonight's set, Winnebago Deal confirm themselves to be one of the most exciting new bands doing the circuit with the two lads onstage (both called Ben confusingly) spewing out red-raw garage punk which sounds like Napalm Death roasting the Strokes in an industrial furnace. You've only got to listen to them screaming "RUNTHATSONOFABITCHOUTTATOWN!" on "Manhunt", the gleefully feral "Whiskey Business" or the utterly brilliant "Shank Fight In M-City", a good half of which consists of the lead singer screaming "I'M GONNA KICK YOUR ARSE!" as the riffs collapse around him. Fuckin' brilliant.
Then, near the end, they almost ruin it with two fifteen-minute space metal jams which totally upset the rhythm of everything that's gone before and see the queue for the bar lengthen. Frustrating doesn't even come close.
Winnebago Deal are a very special band - the first truly great Brit garage punk band for bloody years and a welcome reminder of what Idlewild used to be like back when they were good. But someone needs to tell them there's no shame in bashing everything out in twenty minutes rather than padding things out for the sake of it. Still, a most enjoyable night out by anyone's standards.
