Love Letters:
'Love Letters' is a play written by A.R. Gurney which dramatizes the lives of two star-crossed lovers.
The curtain rises, and Jeff (Andrew Makepeace Ladd III) and Bobbie (Melissa Gardner) are sitting at separate tables on opposite sides of the stage. The play begins as each in turn reads a love letter from the other. The letters reveal information about Andrew´s and Melissa´s life and their relationship to each other. They are friends, but also love each other deeply. Through the letters, the play travels from childhood, through the teen years, and into adulthood. Each letter explains more and more about their lives, their marriages to others, and their mutual love for each other. As Jeff and Bobbie read these letters, they express to the audience the depth of the love felt by Andrew and Melissa toward each other. The audience can, in particular, empathize with Andrew´s pain as he reads the final letter informing him that Melissa has died.
Throughout the entire play, the set remains basically the same -- two tables and two chairs on opposite sides of the stage. However, Jeff and Bobbie are physically aged by makeup and wardrobe.
Bobbie and Jeff performed in 'Love Letters' in late July, 1991, at the Canon Theater in Los Angeles, California.
