Lord Byron (George Gordon) was born in London in January 1788. He published his first poems at tthe age of 19, at 21 started travelling, at 28 left England forever. He died during Greek Independence war in 1824. Most of his work was done during his journeys (1816-24). His most famoous works include Manfred, Cain and Childe Harold.

Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) - this German dramacist and poet was arrested and ordered to refrain from literature after his early drama, The Robbers, was played. To make a living he turned to prose, writing Revolt of the Netherlands. In 1794 he met Goethe, who soon became his good friend. His finest works (Wallenstein in 1799 and William Tell in 1804) were completed in his last years, he died in 1805, at the age of 45.

Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) is probably the greatest Italian poet of all times. He was born in Florence, got involved in politics and was exiled in 1302. He spent the rest of his life as an exile, and in this period his finest and most famous masterpiece, The Divine Comedy (TDC) was written. He died in Ravenna in 1321, before the entire TDC was published.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) - in views of many people the greatest poet of Romanticism, Goethe is best known for Faust, a drama he was writing for almost 60 years. He received careful education and began studying law in Leipzig. In 1771 he moved from Leipzig to Strassburg, in 1775 he became manager of the Court Theater in Weimar at the court of Duke Karl August.

Edgar Allan Poe (1809 - 1849) was brought up by his relatives, his parents died in his early years. He studied at the University of Virginia and West Point - he was expelled from both. He pursued a career of a journalist, writing for several magazines. He is well-known for his horror stories and poems, including The Raven and The Fall of the House of Usher.

John Milton (1608-1674) was born in London, where he received a thorough education, finishing with a MA degree at the age of 24. In 1638 he travelled around Europe, then he served the Commonwealth for 20 years, in close relation with Cromwell. His most famous works include Paradise Lost, and Samson Agonistes.
